Mr. Russert
Tim Russert's untimely passing last Friday (not that anyone's passing is ever "timely") drove home the point that Washington can be a very human town. The outpouring of love and emotion for a very "company town" guy underscored Tim's professionalism, fairness, and likability in a town whose reputation for being partisan and cutthroat is legend. Democrats, Republicans, Independents and even the nonpolitical took time out to honor Tim's memory and the contribution he made to our public debate.
His death, coming two days before Father's Day, was particularly poignant, given his writing on his relationship with his dad and the public joy he took in his son. As a father of two great sons, I couldn't help but hurt for Luke Russert and offer the Russert family condolences. Tim's passing made me reflect on the true joy of life I derive from my relationship with my kids -- and the contribution I hope I make to their lives and the lives I try to touch (through causes I defend and promote) every day.
So, we start another busy week in Washington, certain to be filled with partisan volleys and policy bickering, but with a renewed sense that there are more important things in life than the game of politics. Family, friendships, and civility, to name a few. Washington can be a real home with real neighbors and real feelings. Make the most of your every day in this town and wherever you live life to the fullest.
